Medical coders submit documentation to a number of insurance companies and federal agencies for reimbursement. Using codes makes the process of handling these claims and to identify the provider on a predetermined basis easier.
To be proficient, the medical coder must know the claims processing guidelines for Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Tricare, Medicare and Medicaid. They must properly submit all claims and avoid fraud charges in order for their employer to financially succeed.

High school courses in mathematics, health, biology, typing, bookkeeping, computers and office skills will certainly proof to be helpful in paving the way for a successful career in medical billing and coding.
