We urge potential medical coding and billing students to invest their time and attention to proper education and proper documentation of this education. Today's students are wise to take advantage of didactic classroom at accredited schools, or where appropriate, through licensed online distance education programs. The immense need for expertly trained health care professionals directly contributes to vocational schools and colleges heeding the call for career focused programs that lead to diplomas and degrees.
According to DETC: The word “accreditation” has acquired many shades of meaning over the years. Distance education accreditation is certification by a recognized body that a distance education institution has voluntarily undergone a comprehensive study and peer examination which has demonstrated that the institution does in fact meet the established standards. The institution must perform the functions that it claims: that it has set educational goals for students who enroll, offers formal, organized learning experiences and services that enable students to meet these stated goals, and can, in fact, show that students and graduates have benefited from the learning experiences provided.
Accreditation plays an important role when it comes to the transfer of credits. Going to one school doesn't mean the educational credits earned will automatically transfer to the other. It is possible that a student will have to start all over! It all depends on which and how many credits the school accepts.
The best schools and colleges are approved by the U.S. Department of Education. There are three types of accreditation: regional - national - and based on voc-tech standards. Regional accreditation is the highest level. Regionally accredited schools include Harvard, Yale, and FSU, nationally accredited schools include Everest and Phoenix, and voc-tech accredited schools include The Salter School, Meridian Career Institute, and Branford Hall. If you go to The Salter School and then try to get into Loyola NONE of your credits will transfer.
Distance education programs are a little different. Look for those approved by Distance Education and Training Council (DETC). These schools have gone through a rigorous licensing and approval process and therefore offer quality training—the right training—to a diverse student body from all walks of life.
