Medical Coding Jobs MUST Be Filled! The best time to get
started is now!
Training for Medical Coders
Training for medical coders comes in a wide variety, from training on the job, or a home study program, or
technical school diploma, to a full college degree. Formal training ranges from accellerated courses at vocational
training institutions leading to a technical school diploma, or to two to four years of college leading to an
associate degree. Upon completion of such training many coders may seek professional certification. National
organizations and associations for Billers and Coders are available for the certification processes. They continue
their education by attending seminars and taking continuing education classes.
Medical Coding Instruction
Where so much is at stake it comes at no surprise that physicians, healthcare organizations, and hospitals
prefer to hire credentialed coding staff, and are offering continuing education plans, in-house training, and
other incentives that foster their further education. Some of the doctors have been badly burned in the past by
incompetent, or inadequately trained staff.
Most experts and professionals in this field will agree; the best vocational training comes from schools where
classroom instructions is provided by professionals with some years of direct hands-on work experience in the
medical coding and billing field.
Students will receive instruction on medical billing and coding principles and technology, regulations pertinent
to Medicare, Medicaid, Blue Cross-Blue Shield products, managed care, third party liability, worker's comp,
Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO), indemnity insurers and have a complete understanding of CPT®, HCPCS, ICD-9
coding Level I, II, III, and learn how to identify data as it relates to submitting a clean insurance claim for
reimbursement. Advanced coder education will focus on the transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10. The new codes may also
require a greater understanding of anatomy, physiology, the disease process, and pharmacology.
Combined with self-paced e-learning and open lab training prepares students for the most demanding jobs in
healthcare, business administration, and computer technology. Also, training via workshops, seminars, and
electronic means, such as online distance education courses, web based seminars, message forum exchanges, audio
conferences, and in-services conducted by physicians to explain new procedures are now coming into ever increasing
demand.
