The Occupational Outlook for Medical Coding
and Billing Professionals Remains Excellent
The occupational
outlook for
medical coders has never been better!
Medical coders are highly valued and sought
after by small and large medical practices, clinics,
hospitals, insurance companies, and consulting
firms everywhere. Job offers abound in
the healthcare industry and offices are readily
hiring medical coding
staff.

 Put
Your Success Within
Reach!!! Certification
is very important step. NHA offers two paths toward certification:
their National Certification Exam for
graduates, and their Home Study Certification Program
for experienced medical coders and billers.
Countless Opportunities in
Medical Coding
Medical coding
staff is utilized by hospitals, clinics, doctor's offices,
health maintenance organizations (HMOs), mental health care
facilities and insurance companies.
Academic physician
practices also employ large numbers of medical coders for
their providers across the country to generate both
inpatient and outpatient
billing. They are also hired by
branches of the US Military to help and support
healthcare systems provieded to vets, soldiers, and
dependants.
Security and Satisfaction
A career in medical coding and billing offers job security,
personal satisfaction, challenges and rewarding experiences. To
correctly file a claim for each third party payer the medical
biller has to choose combinations of different standard coding
systems totaling over 10,000 codes.
Location
Most work in offices away from the public's eye, usually
tucked away somewhere in the back. Others report to
freestanding medical coding and billing service
facilities away from the doctor's office or hospital.
Some even work from their own home office, either as
employees with permission from their employer, i.e.
telecommute, or as independent consultants using their own
medical billing and coding programs and practice management
software on a computer they own.
Work
Hours
The nature of this work can lend itself to
alternative, or flexible working arrangements, such as part
time work, full time work and work from home. The majority of
employers, however, expect their medical billing and coding
staff to work a standard 40-hour full-time week for which they
are paid well. Freelancers sometimes work even longer hours.
The more they work, the more they profit.
Work Ethics
Courtesy and
confidentiality must be maintained throughout this job to truly
succeed! Incoming calls from patients who have questions
regarding a bill are directed to the medical biller's office.
The way the medical coder communicates with these callers can
make or break the business. They often are the person
having to deal with patient's criticism, confusion, or anger.
Patients can quickly become frustrated when it comes to dealing
with health care providers and bills over the
phone.
People Skills
Upset patients
do not always remain calm! When they question errors, or
specific services and associated charges on their bill the
medical coding and billing staff must be able to explain
these entries understandably and completely, while being
assertive and empathetic at the same time. Their
profession falls into the 'customer service department'
category and therefore, medical coders, as well
as their medicla billing colleagues must be able to
communicate effectively without becoming confused, or
snappy when questioned, or
challenged.
