Comparing Online Education to Classroom Courses

With Internet classroom teaching, the majority of courses rely on the availability of the instructor to relay information necessary to learn a course of study over the Internet. Books and course materials may not be necessary but it depends on the requirements of that particular course. All communication with the instructor is established over the Internet as well. Comparing online education to classroom courses, many might feel that being in class is better then sitting at home in front of a computer screen. However, there are more positive aspects than negative ones to taking classes online.

Whether or not to take an online course is one hundred percent up to the student and depends on individual capabilities. With deciding to go with the online learning ( otherwise know as "distant learning") versus traditional classroom; you have to decide what is more beneficial to you and your ability to follow a course curriculum. With distance learning there is limited interaction, therefore if you are more of a hands on learner this may not be for you. On the other hand, if you absorb more information by reading loudly or silently to yourself, distance learning would be just as effective.

Distance learning focuses on exactly the content of the course and allows the student to directly focus on the material as it is presented. This is good because it eliminates any outside pressures of being on campus. In a classroom a lot of times, one may feel as though there are in competition with other students and that they are constantly being compared to others. For some this feeling of "comparison" is irrelevant for some it is highly distractive.

Cons

1) No interactions with other classmates can be a bad thing because the medical field is about teamwork and directly communicating with people

2) Interest in finishing the course may decrease because the student is not physically there

3) May cause more of an antisocial attitude in the student

4) No direct contact with the instructor can lead to more confusion, because with the online classroom setting, it may cause students not to ask the appropriate questions

5) Sometimes online courses can be easily forgotten due to the fact that they are "too convenient"

6) No hands-on experience through online based courses alone

7) If the primary computer the student utilizes happens to crash then they may fall behind or end up withdrawing from the course

8) Through an instructor's point of view, it may be harder to enforce the course curriculum over the Web therefore the student success rate will not be as high if they where physically in a classroom setting.
