Medical billing and coding staff is utilized by hospitals, clinics, doctor's offices, health maintenance organizations (HMOs), mental health care facilities and insurance companies. Upset patients do not always remain calm! When they question the charges on their bill the medical biller must be able to explain these charges understandably and completely while being assertive and empathetic at the same time. Medical billers fall into the 'customer service department' category and must be communicate effectively without becoming confused when questioned, or challenged.

Last but not least new federal laws, such as HIPAA, and those regarding electronic claims submission, make it a bit more difficult to do medical billing from home.
