They know they play an important role in this field. The importance of medical coding and billing in reimbursement has employers scrambling for qualified medical coders and billers. Whether as an employee or as an independent consultant working from home, a career in medical coding and billing offers job security, personal satisfaction, challenges and rewarding experiences.

Importance of the Services Medical Billers Provide

Medical billing and coding staff is utilized by hospitals, clinics, doctor's offices, health maintenance organizations (HMOs), mental health care facilities and insurance companies. Many also work from their own home, either as employees with permission from their employer, i.e. telecommute, or as independent consultants using their own medical billing and coding programs and practice management software on a computer to get the job done.

The Challenges!

Courtesy and confidentiality must be maintained throughout this job to truly succeed! Incoming calls from patients who have questions regarding a bill are directed to the medical biller's office. The way the medical billing staff communicates with these callers can make or break the business. The medical biller often is the person having to deal with patient's criticism, because patients can quickly become frustrated and when it comes to dealing with health care providers and bills over the phone.

Upset patients do not always remain calm! When they question the charges on their bill the medical biller must be able to explain these charges understandably and completely while being assertive and empathetic at the same time. Medical billers fall into the 'customer service department' category and must be communicate effectively without becoming confused when questioned, or challenged.

Last but not least new federal laws, such as HIPAA, and those regarding electronic claims submission, make it a bit more difficult to do medical billing from home. However, many have overcome these unique challenges as they arise, and are following their dream working in a career they absolutely love.
