Work Environment

Most medical billers work forty regular office hours Monday through Friday. About one in seven workers work part time.Their work area usually is in a separate area away from front desk (reception window) and clinical areas! However, even though their work area is not directly in the public's eye they still need to have excellent customer service skills.

Medical billing staff typically are employed in an office environment, usually in a medical or hospital facility, although a growing number, particularly experienced medical billers, work at home. Because billing clerks use computers on a daily basis, they may have to sit for extended periods of time and thus may experience eye and muscle strain, backaches, headaches and sometimes repetitive motion injuries.

Medical Bill Collections

The medical biller processes responses from health insurance companies, which includes the so-called explanation of benefits (EOB) and possess state of the art word processing, and accounting skills, be proficient in bookkeeping, and able to type at least 45 words per minute. Duties may also include auditing and/or assigning diagnostic and procedure codes to patient records to complete accurate billing for medical services rendered.

While an increasing amount of patient care is being funded through HMO related insurance where the patient makes a small copayment at the time of service and the doctor bills the managed care company for the balance, a number of patients still need to make arrangements to pay for their medical services directly to the provider.
